Apples roasted and thrown into a hearty chili made with beef, bratwurst and sauerkraut  would make any festival  a Chow Feast!! This is what I  made  for my Sunday Supper Oktoberfest!

Oktoberfest is the longest running beer fall festival which takes place every  Fall during the week of late September and early October in Germany!  It is celebrated the world over as a celebration of the Bavarian culture with authentic German recipes  or recipes which have a touch of German in them. I am so pleased to be participating along with my Sunday Supper team in this celebration of culture!  I always look for chili at any fair or festival and I love chili so I thought of making a chili! You can never have too much chili at any event!

Researching German  chili, the foods that stood out in every recipe were beer, bratwurst and sauerkraut. I have always wanted to make a fall chili with apples and I thought I would combine the traditional German chili with roasted apples and see how that went. I combined 1/2 lb bratwurst with  1 lb  beef  and I roasted the apples before I added them to the chili pot. Roasting any fruit brings out the flavor and my technique did not disappoint!  You could taste the sweet roasted apple flavor in the chili. Beer added depth to the chili and tenderized the meat so the meat flavor was full and strong. I was hesitant to use too much sauerkraut since I wasn’t sure how it might taste so I started with 4 ounces and since I liked the texture and body it added to the chili I increased to 8 ounces. All in all I was quite happy with all the blending of flavors, taste and texture of my apple roasted beer chili. It was super easy since all I had to do was throw everything into the crockpot and let it cook itself.  You can leave out the beer and sauerkraut if you want to make this more kid friendly since the chili does have a strong flavor. and may not appeal to younger children.  It will still taste great with roasted apples and all the other good stuff! I am pretty sure this chili will be a hit at any festival or fair and I thoroughly enjoyed making it! Hope you give it a try! From my kitchen to yours :)!!
