Baked Sweet Potato Chips Laced With Cayenne & Garlic Salt

 

Crisp baked sweet potato chips laced with  cayenne & garlic make a sweet & savory treat! I am on sugar-free stint this week along with three other foodie friends and when I crave sugar I like to fix sweet potatoes. I love sweet potato chips and when I add a tinge of cayenne they actually taste sweeter to me.  These are super easy to make and healthy too! I baked them in my new Nuwave oven and my conventional oven.  Sweet potato chips disappear very quickly in my home so making 2 batches at the same time seems to work best. It took just 14 minutes in the Nuwave oven and tasted crisper than the conventional oven where I had to bake it for 30 minutes. I love the Nuwave oven and use it a lot. It has the speed of a microwave with the crispness and browning of a conventional oven. Huge win! But, like I said you can bake these chips in a conventional oven as well. One trick to getting good chips is to slice them evenly.  If you don’t slice them evenly, the cooking time by thickness varies, so you may end up with a few burnt slices.  Not a biggie, you can always discard the burnt slices. The thinner the slice, the crisper the chip. I used a mandolin slicer, sliced them about 1/8 th of an inch and I got slightly thick chips which is what I wanted.  I keep the skin on the sweet potatoes since most of the nutrition is under the skin and it tastes fine like that.   My pics are not fancy. I had no time to get good pics before family demolished them. Just goes to prove how good they taste :)!

 

 

 

Nutrition Wise!

Sweet potatoes may be one of nature’s unsurpassed sources of beta-carotene or Vitamin A. Since Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin, it is best absorbed with a little fat. It is also high in anthocyanin which has anti- inflammatory properties. It is also boosts a good amount of fiber. To get the most nutrients out of your sweet potato, don’t peel it too much. Just a good scrub with a veggie brush or a light scrape should be ok. Most of the nutrients are close to the skin!

 

The Nuwave oven rack makes it easy for airflow from the bottom leading to evenly cooked crisp chips!

 

 

Sweet Potato Chips with Cayenne & Garlic Salt

Ingredients

  • 3 sweet potaoes (evenly sliced )
  • 1 Tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 Tsp garlic salt

Note

Since ovens may vary, crack oven often to check on the chips and remove at the right time.

Directions

Evenly slice sweet potato into thin slices ( i sliced them 1/8 th of an inch)
Sprinkle with cayenne, garlic salt and mix well.
Coat a cookie sheet or baking tray with non stick spray or coconut oil. Arrange slices on a baking sheet in one single layer
Bake in the nu wave oven for 7 minutes on each side. You can also bake at 350 degrees in a conventional oven for 25 minutes and then at 400 degrees for 5 minutes. Flip after 25 minutes.
