DIY All Natural Sport Drink With Coconut Water and Electrolytes From Nature

All natural, raw wholesome sport drink made with ingredients you can pronounce. When I go to the gym, I see folks carrying some form of hydration with them which is a good thing since our body needs to be replenished every time we exercise. But when I see people carry Gatorade or those other bottled sport drinks I cringe because Gatorade, etc. with all its additives is not a sport drink to me. If I had to endorse a sport drink it would be coconut water. Pure, unadulterated, raw coconut water straight from the shell it comes from.  My grandmother’s home garden in India had 9 coconut trees all around it and we drank fresh coconut water whenever we went there on summer break and it is still my favorite drink in the world. Even now when I visit India, I always walk down my mom’s home to the corner street vendor who sells fresh coconut water. When he asks you to pick a coconut, you look at them and they look a little dry and rugged ( see the pictures I took below)!  Different shapes and sizes, some a little discolored and scratched from their fall to the ground. But open this slightly rough, imperfect fruit and inside you get a taste of pure unadulterated nectar that flows into your gut energizing you and making you feel good. Proof that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover! Anyway, you can cut the nut open after you drink the liquid and you get this soft, tender-hearted flesh that tastes like an unusual slime that it totally yummy. In the U S we don’t easily get the coconut fruit but instead we have cartons of coconut water neatly lined up ready to be consumed.  I buy them but I miss those rough, rugged far from perfect coconuts with the real thirst-quenching liquid.   I can’t wait to visit India and drink from the real coconuts. You have to consume the coconut water in one shot because it wont stay fresh too long.  You only open the coconut when you want to drink it.  Some people prefer the perfectly boxed cartons that can be easily popped into the fridge after you drink a glass and it’s a matter of choice really. Overall, boxed or raw,  coconut water is good for you!

This sport water I made has coconut water as the base but can be made using plain water too.  Often, I use just plain water to make and it’s still good. I use lemon or lime juice, some Himalayan salt and a pinch of powdered magnesium like natural calm.  Sometimes I skip the magnesium, but it still has a lot of beneficial properties. Just don’t overuse the magnesium or you could have some diarrhea.  I sometimes add a shot of fresh ginger and that enhances the taste. You can add a little raw sugar since that will enhance the energizing property of the sport drink. I choose to avoid sugar since I want to keep this diabetic friendly and I opted to use stevia instead. When I make this for my kids, I use a little raw sugar and yes, my kids love this sports drink and ask me to make them one when they go the gym. The fact that my kids love it tells me it’s a good drink.

Nutrition wise
Coconut water is loaded with hydrating electrolytes which make it an ideal sports drink. It is low in calories and fat. Loaded with potassium and low in sodium it’s a great drink for people who have blood pressure.  Magnesium is great for soothing tired muscles and cramps which made it a great addition to any sport drink. Pink Himalayan salt is mined salt, from the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains in India. It’s believed to be the healthiest of all types of salt and is one of the purest available. The unique salmon-colored hue of Pink Himalayan salt is due to the amounts of trace elements (impurities) found within it. Many of these are minerals valuable to your body’s functions, including manganese, phosphorus, potassium, and iron. The presence of these minerals gives Pink Himalayan salt its distinctive metallic taste. It replaces all the salts your body loses during exercise.
