Resveratrol : Benefits of Red Wine in a Pill

Sunithi Selvaraj, RD @ 26.04.2012 A-Z Blogging Challenge 11 comments

I ‘m still in the A-Z  Blogging challenge  and blogging the letter R.  One of my favorite R topics is Reseveratrol the potent red wine pill which has all the heart healthy benefits of wine. Resveratrol is a natural antioxidant found in high concentrations on grape skins from which it is extracted. To get the same benefit of taking one pill, a person will need to drink about 1,000 bottles of wine a day which, for obvious reasons, is not recommended. I started taking Resveratrol  2 years back and have reaped the benefits immensely. Red wine is thought to be responsible for the French Paradox. The reason why the French, in spite of their high fat consumption have lower rates of heart disease than their global counterparts who eat less fat. This has been attributed to the fact that they drink 2 – 3 glasses of red wine with each meal which counteract the effects of the high fat diet. Well, consuming 2 – 3 glasses of red wine with every meal can be difficult, not to mention expensive but getting the benefits in a pill is easier. People who have an overall intolerance to alcohol can avoid its side effects by taking a red wine pill or a resveratrol supplement. Thus, they can enjoy the benefits of  red wine in the form of resveratrol without suffering the negative side effects of alcohol consumption.

Some benefits of this magic pill or red wine:

Heart healthy :  It is  believed to  help widen the arteries – making it easier for blood to flow freely through and works at reducing the  clogging of the arteries).

Anti aging : My favorite and the real reason I take it ;) It has a high antioxidant level and has the second highest ORAC (Oxegyn Retaining Absorbance Capacity ) score, second only to pomegranate. ORAC is a standardized test adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to measure the Total Antioxidant Potency of foods and nutritional supplements. Seeing how highly rated red wine is, no wonder it is touted to have anti-aging properties.

Weight Loss : It is said to activate the SiRT1 gene in people. This gene comes alive when you excercise and restrict calories by  working  to break down stored fat in the body. This pill can kick your metabolism into overdrive and can potentially helping lose fat and achieve wt loss goals. I myself found this to be true when I started taking Resveratrol.  I gradually lost pounds over a few months.

Cancer fighting : It has been linked to certain types of cancer, particularly Leukemia.  It appears to  inhibit the cell proliferation often largely responsible for the disease. The reason again could be due to the high ORAC score and high level of antioxidants.

There are many kinds of Resvertrol products available today in the liquid and pill form in health food stores and local drug stores. I get mine from www.vitacost.com because I buy all my vitamins from there and find quality vitamins for less. Considering the number of supplements I take, I need reasonably priced ones or I may go bankrupt. I probably should have written somewhere that I haven’t been paid by the Resveratrol company to write this :) I just believe so much in this supplement I had to write about it.

I am a heart patient who has sufferred heart attacks twice. My doctor advised me to take 30 to 60 ml of red wine daily. So far, I have not touched any liquor. I am aged 55. I wish tostart by taking redwine 30 ml per day and twice in a week. Will it work?
