Green Mango chutney that is savory & sweet ! Chunky Mango Chutney with coconut oil, sesame seeds, chili and a touch of brown sugar.  My Sunday Supper team is doing a Mother’s Day special to honor the moms in our lives. Such a great idea !! My mom is very special to me and  I am honored to be participating this week with a recipe inspired by her. Green Mango Chutney !! When I away in college I would always take back bottles of Mango Chutney every time I visted home. My mom made jars of it and it was like comfort food ! I ate in the college mess/cafeteria so having a bit of this tangy chunky mango chutney with my meals just made the food seem so much better, not to mention added a zip to the meal. Although I crave mango chutney I have never made it here. I buy a watered down version of it which doesn’t taste half as good as what my mom used to make ! I called mom, got the recipe and made it today. Yumm ! It was super easy and so good, I am not sure why I waited this long. I added some coconut oil and black sesame seeds to the original recipe. The rawer the mango, the better it is and this chunky mango chutney will go with anything : sandwiches, roast, baked chicken…. I just like to lick it plain ! I am so glad I made it today and I know I will be making a lot more jars of mango chutney in the days to come ! Thanks Mom !!

About my mom !

My mom is an amazing woman who inspires me everyday. I have fond memories of wearing beautiful hand painted beautiful dresses to school made by my mom that no other kid had. She was (and is) known as a very good cook, so when someone complements me on my cooking I think I got the genes from her ! One of the most important things my mom taught me was life balance. She worked, but was always there for us. Although I had a working mom I never ever felt her absence. Every event in my life as a kid, my mom was there cheering me on. This is something I try to emulate as a working mom : being there for my kids and finding a balance. My mom lives far away but we talk a lot and often time when I feel life getting crazy I call her and talking to her helps !! She ‘s visiting me in August and I can’t wait. Perhaps I’ll make some Mango Chutney for her 🙂 !!

  • This sounds delicious. I love mango and I could easily see eating this on top of my pancakes. I’m sorry your mom lives so far away but I’m glad she’s visiting this summer!

  • Love mango chutney. Will be making this soon ! Such a zesty recipe. Will go great with pork chops am thinking.

  • I love a good chutney and like you said many that you buy are not as flavorful as homemade. Yours looks like one I would enjoy often, especially because I very much like hot/sweet combination.
Lovely tribute to your mom too. What a special lady!

  • I love your post about your Mom!! It brought tears to my eyes because it is so sweet!! Love the chutney! I bet this would go awesome on so many dishes!!! Yum!

  • Lovely, lovely chutney! Mangoes and chutneys are favorites in my kitchen and this being a heritage recipe makes it even more interesting Suni! I thought it included passion fruit, because of the black seeds…! Beautiful post. Happy Mother´s day!

  • I love how the sesame seeds almost make this look like passion fruit from afar! I have always wanted to try green mango, but wasn’t really ever sure how to work with it or what to do with it. Maybe I’ll start with this, it sounds delicious!

  • This looks wonderful.

In my experience, green mango is truly green and not at all sweet. They are sold as a separate entity completely from regular mangoes. Is that what you recommend using or do you recommend buying the mangoes that are expected to be sweet and using them while they are still hard?

    • Raw Green mangoes would be the best ! That’s what we used back home. Here I’ve learnt to improvise and I used regular mangoes, but as raw as I could pick them. If you get green, use them, otherwise the raw version of reg mangoes works too !

  • Love this mango chutney!I\’ve also never made it myself but love it with anything!Such a sweet story about your childhood and your Mom Sunithi and so glad she\’ll be with you in August 🙂

  • Man, everyone’s posts this week are making me tear up! Your mom is adorable, Sue. I hope the next few months pass quickly so that soon it’ll be August and you two can be reunited. I love how everyone has dishes that are just synonymous with their moms and childhoods. This chutney looks gorgeous and I bet it’s super flavourful. I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day!

  • My mouth is watering thinking about this! Did you take your homemade chutney down to the college cafeteria with you? That’s so awesome! haha.

  • Mangoes are the true delicacy, and a mango chutney is like an icing on the cake. My mother always makes the mango chutney when the mangoes come in the market, but she uses some other method, in which she directly heats the mango in a pan with the other ingredients. I will share this recipe with my mother, so that she can try something new. Thanks for the share.

  • Mango chutney is a treat specially in the summer season as it is the season for mangoes. It tastes yummy with a spicy dish and my mouth already waters as I write this comment. Thanks for sharing the delicious recipe.
